Lab Mission
To make impactful scientific discoveries, provide an excellent training environment for future scientists and communicators, and advance the long-term goals of those in the lab.
Values
Representation, Opportunity, Access
The lab will do its part to build a representative and welcoming scientific community. This requires creating an environment that is accessible to people of all backgrounds and requires combating inequalities that pervade both science and society.
Community
Science is a team sport. As a lab, and as individuals, we will achieve more if we teach and learn with one another. This means listening to one another, respecting each others’ views, and fostering an environment where all feel comfortable contributing.
Communication
The most effective scientists think well, write well, and speak well. These skills also transcend disciplines. So, by emphasizing these qualities in its trainees, the lab aims to set them up for success - wherever their career takes them.
Training
At its core, the lab strives for excellent science and so aims to provide excellent training. Beyond communication skills, this means instilling habits that produce rigorous and reproducible findings. Habits like attention to detail, careful organization, consistent effort, and pride in one’s work. It also means encouraging resilience. The lab will look at the daily habits of its scientists when measuring success moreso than their data generated.
Career Advancement
Most members will spend only a small portion of their career in the Forsberg lab. A central component of the lab’s mission will be to help its trainees build skills and find opportunities that will help them advance their careers.
Accountability
This page serves not only to establish expectations for incoming lab members, but also to hold one another accountable to these values. This accountability is especially important for the PI. All lab members should feel comfortable using this page to remind Kevin of these commitments.
